teachers in curriculum pilot team review curricula

The Sunnyvale School District K–5 English Language Arts (ELA), English Language Development (ELD), and Spanish Language Arts (SLA) Curriculum Pilot Team has completed the extensive review phase and selected three programs to move forward for classroom piloting.

Over the course of two weeks, our dedicated Pilot Team—composed of teachers from across the district—engaged in a rigorous, evidence-based review:

  • Pilot Launch (10/28): Established common ground on literacy best practices, including the Science of Reading.
  • Curriculum Fair (11/5 & 11/6): Reviewed 10 programs using a detailed evaluation rubric to build consensus on the top three.

We thank the Pilot Team for their commitment; their efforts were essential in selecting high-quality materials for the next phase.

We are excited to announce the three curricula selected for classroom pilots:

  • Benchmark Advance (ELA), Express (ELD), & Adelante (SLA)
  • McGraw Hill Emerge (ELA & ELD)
  • Amplify CKLA (ELA), Language Studio (ELD), & Caminós (SLA)

Additionally, our Juntos Dual Language Immersion program teachers will be piloting supplemental programs: Savvas, miVisión (SLA) and Data Works, Launch to Literacy (ELD).

Next Steps:

  • The district team is finalizing schedules and resources with publishers.
  • Classroom Pilots (Nov. 2025-April 2026): Each program will be implemented for approximately six weeks to evaluate program effectiveness firsthand.
  • Data & Feedback (Throughout Pilot): Gathering student data, staff input, and direct teacher experience. Family preview opportunity dates will be shared soon.
  • Final recommendation (June 2026): Pilot Team builds consensus and recommends the final curriculum to the Board of Education for 2026-2027 implementation.
