Highlights from the Meeting

The Sunnyvale School District held a Regular Board Meeting on March 26, 2026, to discuss several updates and initiatives affecting our community. Below is a summary of the key actions and reports from the session.

Lakewood Lion wins Future Chefs Culinary Competition

The board recognized Abigail, a fifth grader at Lakewood, for winning first place in Sodexo’s annual Future Chef Culinary Competition. Her Laksa Noodles with Tumeric Chicken recipe will be featured on the cafeteria lunch menus districtwide!

SMS Named Distinguished School

The board celebrated Sunnyvale Middle School for earning the 2026 California Distinguished School designation, one of the state’s highest honors for public schools. The school received distinction in the Achievement Gap Closers category, highlighting its success in advancing academic excellence while ensuring equitable outcomes for all students.

Refinancing School Bonds

The Board of Education approved a resolution to "refund" older debt, a strategic move designed to lower interest costs and reduce the tax burden on the community. Similar to a homeowner refinancing a mortgage when interest rates drop, the District is looking to replace up to $90,000,000 of higher-interest debt from 2013 and 2015 with new bonds at lower current market rates. The District intends to go to market in early June, but will cancel the sale entirely if the potential savings disappear.

Increased Developer Fees

Shortly after a Public Hearing, the Board approved Resolution #R26-22 to update developer fees for new residential and commercial construction. These fees ensure that developers—not existing taxpayers—help cover the cost of modernizing classrooms and expanding school facilities. By keeping these fees current with state standards, we’re ensuring every student has a seat in a safe, modern, and high-quality learning environment.
